100,000 Twitter Followers!? Porn, twitter & mainstream…

As reported last week in AVN and XBiz, it is pretty awesome to announce I passed 100,000 twitter followers… becoming the first MILF performer in adult to ever do so. Here is my twitter. I am pretty darn happy with that result. I am just the fifth adult performer to have and keep over 100,000 (Jenna Jameson, Bree Olson, Sasha Grey & Pinky being the others). It is surprising to me because when twitter first came out… I was NOT on the bandwagon and held back for a number of months using it much. I viewed twitter as a publicists worst nightmare – girls tweeting about the prozac they were on seemed potentially career ending. I also worried it might deter people wanting to join my Official site if they could simply tweet me. It was Sara Jay who one day convinced me to take it more seriously and thank goodness I did. Being able to directly reach fans so they can get to know me & the other girls in the Vette Nation Army of pornstar websites has been a contributing reason why more people are joining our independent network of pornstar sites than ever before. I can reach fans quicker and easier than ever.

Don’t get me wrong, twitter is NOT and never will be a replacement for real interaction with fans. Fans who follow my twitter might be disappointed if they think it is. Having said that, it is an incredibly powerful tool to meet & stay in contact with fans, performers and just about anyone in the world. For example, who knew that I would ever actually meet Tony Robbins through twitter or that tweets about giving blowjobs to followers would somehow be picked up by mainstream news outlets such as the Huffington Post, Time & media outlets around the globe? Just recently a one sentence tweet that I made ended up on the front page of newspapers in Indonesia.

Twitter’s flexibility comes at just the right time. Folks following my career might remember seeing a lot of me over at Myspace where I had amassed quite a loyal crowd. The disappointing demise of Myspace and all the effort that went into having a strong fan base there has seemed to pay off with an even stronger following at Twitter… much to my relief. I think of Twitter frankly as kind of a bipolar Facebook. Facebook for some bizarre reason boasts over 500 million users but deleted adult performers for just setting up profiles. By contrast, Twitter does not police anything that adult performers tweet… including nudity, adult links and just about anything they say. No nudity in your avatar or background picture is allowed but if you want to tweet that you have a dildo stuck in your ass, for some reason that is acceptable. I only pray Twitter does not fall victim to the conservatism as it moves up in the rankings of one of the most powerful websites on the planet. Fingers crossed that I will not wake up one morning and find my account suspended.

But now for some perspective. Justin Bieber has 8 million followers – amazing considering the entire population of Norway is about 3 million people. The Kardashian’s have a similar amount. Lesser ‘celebrities’ routinely see a million plus. The most ANY adult performer has been able to get? A little over 200,000 – with both of those performers (Bree Olson & Jenna Jameson receiving tons of endless mainstream publicity for their adventures & relationships). For all it’s desire to be considered mainstream and acceptable, the world of adult STILL is not there. While my 100,000 followers is super cool and a LOT of people… it pales in comparison to the mainstream figures celebrities get. It is evident to me that the world of adult STILL has a LONG way to go to reach true mainstream acceptance in society. Sure I’d love to reach a million followers but I’d likely be a GILF for that to ever take place. It is as if people are frightened their significant others will check who they are ‘following’ – they maybe bookmark the page or type it in manually when surfing but don’t always actually ‘follow.’ 100,000 sure is amazing but I sure would love to add some zero’s to that number.
